Quick Architectural Overview
ePLANETe is organized as a hierarchy of 6 Doorways, 12 Thematic Spaces, and 24 Galleries, reflected in the main menu and the left-hand sidebar: the top section lists the six Doorways, and selecting one reveals its Thematic Spaces and their respective Galleries. Some Thematic Spaces are accessible through more than one Doorway — this is intentional, as the contents and uses of the Galleries are interconnected.
Each Gallery curates Collections of objects for exploring different facets of sustainability. Contributed by diverse stakeholders and perspectives, these Collections support ePLANETe's purpose: an online platform for assessment and discussion, fostering social deliberation and enhancing governance.
The public version of ePLANETe gives access only to subsets of these Collections, sometimes referred to as "Bundles". A Bundle contains Collections either (a) compiled specifically to illustrate the character of a Gallery, or (b) created by a User Community within a project that has chosen to make them publicly visible.
The Record: ePLANETe's Core Concept
At its core, ePLANETe is built around the notion of the Record: an elementary object described by a set of metadata fields. A Record is always displayed as an element of a Collection. Within a Collection, individual objects — sometimes called elementary knowledge propositions (EKPs) — are typically grouped into subsets known as Zones, Chapters, or Areas. Objects can be explored Area by Area, or by following a Pathway leading through the contents of one or more Areas.
Each Record is characterized by a set of coordinates, or Context(s): its membership in a Collection, its Area within that Collection, and the Pathway linking it to other objects. These coordinates give the Record its unique positioning. A Record may, however, be attributed multiple Contexts, making it visible in several ways across the ePLANETe system — like an item at a forest crossroads, reachable by different paths.
This contextualized architecture is a fundamental design principle of ePLANETe: every object and every Collection addresses the pertinence of knowledge propositions — about what, for whom, and why — and can be embedded in multiple contexts, enabling simultaneous use across diverse locations — a hallmark of ePLANETe's architecture confondue (interwoven and entangled architecture).
