Welcome to the new ePLANETe, a knowledge-sharing platform about sustainable development.

It works as a Multi-Project environment for collaborative learning and deliberation support.
Once logged-in, you can use the project switcher if you are member of several projects.  (In some cases you may have to log in again to gain access.)

A Quick Architectural Overview

ePLANETe's architecture is a hierarchy of "6 Doorways-12 Thematic Spaces-24 Galleries".

This structure is represented on the main menu and on the left-hand side bar:

  • The top section presents the six Doorways.
  • Selecting one reveals its associated Thematic Spaces, and their respective Galleries.

The Thematic Spaces may, in some cases, be accessed by more than one Doorway.  This is not a error, as the contents and uses of the different galleries are interconnected.

Beneath each Thematic Space lie the Galleries.

These Galleries curate "Collections of objects" providing opportunities for exploration of different facets of sustainability.  These contents may come  from diverse stakeholders and perspectives, and so cumulatively there is a rich diversity of contributions and insights.  Our aim is to provide an online platform for assessment and discussion, fostering social deliberation and enhancing governance.

The Public ePLANETe gives access only to sub-sets of the Collections of objects relating to a given Gallery.  These sub-sets, sometimes referred to as "Bundles", are made up of Collections of objects (a) that have been compiled specifically to illustrate and demonstrate the character of the Gallery; or (b) that have been created by a User Community in the context of a particular project which has chosen to make these Collections visible to the wider public.

More technically, the overall core concept of ePLANETe is to delineate the structure of what we refer to as "Record".

A Record is a elementary object briefly described by a set of fields of meta information.

A Record is always made visible as an element in a Collection of objects.  These collections have internal structure related to their envisaged uses.  Very often, the individual objects -- sometimes referred to as elementary knowledge propositions (or EKPs) -- are grouped into subsets, referred to as Zones, Chapters or Areas.  It is possible to explore the objects Area by Area, or to navigate through the Records by following a "Pathway" that leads in a specific way to the contents of one or more specific Areas.

Each Record is characterised by several coordinates, also known as its Context(s).  Principally, these consist of specifications for membership of a Collection, of an Area within the collection, and of a Pathway linking the Record to other objects within the collection.  These coordinates give a Record its unique positioning ; but also it is possible for a Record to be attributed multiple Contexts, so that it is visible in several different ways within the larger ePLANETe system.  Imagine a Record as an item found at a junction in a forest where various paths meet: it can be accessed through different pathways.

Each element of the ePLANETe platform, including Records, is designed with context in mind as a fundamental principle: the pertience of knowledge propositions (or collections of propositions) about what, for whom, and why?

This represents a Contextualized architecture, whose purpose is to enable each object, and each collection of objects, to be embedded in multiple contexts, thereby facilitating their simultaneous utilization across diverse locations—a hallmark of merged architecture.
