General National Id Romania_ 06 Site name Lower Prut Floodplain Natural Park Summary The project's objective was to improve the conservation status of aquatic bird species in Lower Prut Floodplain Natural Park, Galati County, Romania, through a series of strategic interventions involving scientific inventory, monitoring activities, sites restoration, raising awareness activities, implementation of the park management plan and designating four Special Protected Area - Romanian Natura 2000 sites. Partners were the University of Bucharest, Romanian ornithological society and Romsilva-Galati Forestry. Light or indepth? Design & implementations Application scale River Installation date 2009 Area subject to Land use change or Management/Practice change (ha) 605,400024414063 Favourable preconditions Wetlands belong to the category of ecologically fragile areas, their dynamic being influenced mainly by the qualitative and quantitative characteristic of the water in the hydrographical basin in which they extend. For this reason, the conservation measures promoted in these spaces must be doubled by a strict control of the anthropic activities / arrangements using water for different purposes or as a medium of discharging some wastes. The rehabilitation works are aimed at the maintaining of the water level of the Mata Lake for the protection of the existing habitats, an area making integral part of special conservation area in the Lower Prut Floodplain Natural Park, both during drought periods and the flooding ones. Quantified objectives The rehabilitation works will consist in the restoration of the separation and subdivision in Mata Area. In October 2009 rehabilitation works were carried out on the dykes on Mata Lake, Galati County. The works consisted of filling with soil and gravel and compacting the gaps that appeared in the dykes. The two dykes, making the object of the investment are: dike 1 (1800 m), separating Mata Lake (Galati county) from Carja Lake (Vaslui County) and dike 2 (3600 m), separating Mata Lake into two basins.
